Day 23 - More Land of Lincoln

We cycled straight east and made it past Danville right next to the Indiana state line - flat Illinois makes it so much easier.  I continued reading the 'Lincoln gave a speech here', or 'practiced law here', or 'slept here when this corner was a tavern' signs in the towns throughout central Illinois.  Our 'Lincoln day' in Springfield yesterday was super - saw the only home he & Mary ever owned, his tomb at the Oak Ridge Cemetery, and the Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum.  Thoughts for the day:

  1. It seems so sad that Lincoln only had 6 days to feel the satisfaction of the war's end before he was killed.  The Lincoln museum in Springfield is really worth the visit.
  2. An unexpected highlight today was riding through the University of Illinois campus in Champaign - Urbana.  I had to get an up close picture of the football field (this was our first Big 10 stadium view of the trip).  I also watched the new students congregating as it was the official student move in day.
  3. I like taking pictures of the farmhouses.  I noticed one today with a plaque stating the home had won the Governor's contest in 1940 for most beautiful farmhouse in the region.  It still looks great today.
