Day 27 - Into the Buckeye State.

We entered the 10th state of our trip - Ohio.  I have been looking forward to biking in Ohio because I worked with about 5 native Ohioans the past 2 years at Hawaiian Telcom, and heard many stories about the state.   We noticed: windmills at the state line, higher population density than the parts of Illinois & Indiana we saw, very few cows, and more industry (the largest Campbell's Soup plant in the world is located in Napoleon, OH).  Thoughts for the day:

  1. We followed the Maumee River from Defiance for 5 hours all the way to the town of Maumee.  I had never heard of Maumee until 2 days ago when Lindsay & Eric told us that was the town they lived in during their Toledo med school years.  The river drains northwestern Ohio & parts of Indiana & flows into Lake Erie.  The rapids at Grand Rapids, OH were really cool.
  2. As we travel east the recorded history is longer, so more historical signs to read.  At Defiance we learned about the Indian wars of the northwest territory right after the revolutionary war period, and the involvement in the War of 1812.
  3. Ohio is a swing state yet I only saw one Romney sign & zero Obama signs.  Based on that poll I predict Romney will win Ohio.
